POWNAL FIRE & RESCUE

The Pownal Fie & Rescue Department supports a Fire Chief who is elected by the Town for a three-year term.  The Chief oversees the working of the Department.  This includes scheduling trainings, managing the budget, hiring staff, purchasing necessary equipment, and many other tasks that make for a well-run Department.

Within the Department, is the Fire Company, an entity that fundraises and provides support for the Department.

Pownal also has a First Responder Team who responds to medical calls.  Some members are trained as EMT’s.  This Department periodically offers CPR classes for recertification. The Rescue Department holds regular trainings to give members the opportunity to practice their skills and to work through a variety of scenarios.

Pownal uses Freeport Rescue for transport and all emergency calls are dispatched to the Freeport Dispatch Center by dialing 911.

The Pownal Fire & Rescue Department always welcomes new members – either as fire fighters or rescue personnel, and all volunteers are needed and valued.

Fire Permits

The Fire Class Day is determined each day by the Maine Forestry Service, (http://www.maine.gov/doc/mfs/firedanger/fire.shtml). Fire Permits are issued accordingly.  You can obtain a permit from the Town Clerk during regular business hours (Mon 8:30am – 6:30pm, Tues-Thurs 8:30am-4:30pm, Fri 8:30am-12:30pm) and on Saturday and Sunday mornings, from 9 – 11:00, at the Center Fire Station.

Fire Chief Steps Down

Due to personal reasons, Dave Malone, has stepped down from his position as Pownal Fire and Rescue Chief.  We thank Dave for his years of service in this very important position and are pleased that Dave will remain as a member of the Fire Department.  His knowledge, skills and experience in fire fighting are needed and very much valued.

New Fire Chief

We welcome (Howard) Scott Pollock as the new Pownal Fire and Rescue Chief.  Scott was appointed by the Board of Selectmen on May 21, 2007, and will assume all duties of the Chief until the next municipal election in 2008.  At that time, we will hold an election for Fire Chief for 1 year – which will complete Dave Malone’s original term.

Scott has served as Deputy Fire Chief for the Town of Pownal for several years and was willing to take on the responsibilities of Chief at this time.  We thank Scott for taking on this important role and in working with the Department during this transition.
