Welcome to the town of Pownal, Maine.
Pownal is a town in Cumberland County located between the towns of North Yarmouth, Freeport, Durham and New Gloucester. Pownal was settled in 1680 and incorporated on March 3, 1808, from a portion of Freeport.
Currently, Pownal has a population of about 1500 and supports Pownal Elementary School Administrative District #62, with grades pre-K through 8th.
The rural character of Pownal offers residents and visitors many recreational opportunities. Bradbury Mountain State Park is located in Pownal and offers picnicking and a modest walk to the summit giving hikers a vista view of the surrounding area.

NEXT TOWN MEETING – June 16, 2008, 7:00pm at Pownal Elementary School
To coincide with the decision to change the Town’s fiscal year, the Board of Selectmen is setting the next town meeting for June 2008 to vote on warrant articles which will cover the annual budget from July 1, 2008, to June 30, 2009, as follows: Tentative secret ballot election date set for June 10. Remaining Town Meeting articles will be voted on at Pownal School on June 16 at 7:00pm. FMI, call 688-4611.
DOG LICENCES
Licenses were due by January 31, 2008. Dogs can still be registered for an additional $15 per animal up until the end of February; starting in March, the late fee is $25. Licenses are available at Town Hall during regular business hours. Please bring proof of rabies and spay or neuter to license your dog.

June 8 – POWNAL’S HISTORY BOOK IS HERE! Compiled and written by member of the Scenic and Historical Society, the book ON POWNAL TIME – 100 years in a rural Maine town, 1908-2008 will be first presented at this tea. Autographed copies will be on sale starting at 3:00 with comments and discussion at 4:00. Refreshments will be served. FMI, call Donna Boyles 688-4780.
June 14 – Civil War Encampment Reenactment. The Third Maine Infantry will be holding their full event at Bradbury Mountain State Park, 9:00am – 5:00pm, rain or shine. Park entrance fee will be waived for that day. Bicentennial memorabilia will be on sale as well as the new Pownal history book! FMI, call Kathy 688-4153.
June 22 – Dedication ceremony at the North Pownal United Methodist Church to commemorate the only remaining Pownal one-room schoolhouse. This schoolhouse is now part of the Methodist Church and has been named in honor of Marjorie Brooks who taught there for many years. This is hosted by the Pownal Scenic & Historical Society. June 28 – Box Lunch Social & Watermelon Eating Contest at the Congregational Church. 11:00am. Old fashioned games in the afternoon. FMI, call Doris 688-4791.
June 29 – First Paris Congregational Church will hold a special church service featuring old favorite hymns and special music, 9:30am. Followed by a fellowship dinner at noon. FMI, call Doris 688-4791.

HOUSHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE COLLECTION DAY: The town of Pownal will partner with Gray for collection of these residential wastes for Saturday, August 23 from 9:00am to 1:00pm at the Gray Salt and Sand Shed just off Route 26 north out of Gray. These types of wastes include abrasive cleaners, ammonia base cleaners, bleach, degreasers, disinfectants, floor cleaner and wax, furniture polish, moth balls, oven cleaners, pool chemicals, rug and upholstery cleaners, rust and spot removers, silver cleaners, toilet and drain cleaners, acids and corrosive materials, muriatic acid. Garden products, auto products, paint, hobby and pet products are also taken. No commercial waste will be accepted. No latex paints, fire extinguishers, propane tanks, computer monitors, TV’s, ammunition, radioactive material, biological waste, medical waste or explosive/shock sensitive wastes will be accepted. Do not transport more than 15 gallons or 100 lbs. Use containers less than or equal to 5 gallons. Do not mix wastes together. Bring wastes in the trunk of vehicle or bed of truck, keep away from passengers. At the site, a staff member will help you unload your vehicle. You will be asked to stay inside your vehicle.
