Pownal Cares: Help Is Here — and You Can Help Too!

In Pownal, community means more than just friendly waves and shared roads — it means looking out for one another when times get tough. Whether you need a hand or want to lend one, Pownal has a network of resources ready to help with food, heat, and essential needs

FOOD

If your pantry’s running low, there are local options ready to help.

  • North Pownal Community Center Food Pantry — Located at 851 Lawrence Rd, open Wednesdays, 8–11 a.m.
  • Vaughndella Curtis Food Pantry at Freeport Community Services (FCS) — Serving both Freeport and Pownal residents at 53 Depot Street, Freeport. Hours: Monday 11–3, Tuesday 9:30–11:30, and Wednesday 11–1:30.

HEAT

No one should have to face a cold night alone.

  • Emergency Wood Bin — Next to the sand shed behind Pownal Town Hall. Take what you need in an emergency, but please leave some for others.
  • Freeport Wood Bank — Provides free firewood to families who heat with wood but struggle to afford it. Learn more at Freeport Wood Bank
  • Carol Kaplan Fuel Fund — Offers emergency fuel assistance (wood pellets, propane, or heating oil). Apply through FCS.

General Assistance — Available at Pownal Town Hall for emergency needs. Call (207) 688-4611 x1 to ask about eligibility.

And if you need warm clothing or household goods, FCS runs one of New England’s best Thrift Stores, packed with affordable, quality items. Call (207) 865-3985 x205 for help or voucher information.
