New License Plates Are Coming May 1st

Pine Tree Plates are replacing the Chickadee Plates starting May 1. If you have a Chickadee Plate and your registration date is May 1 or later, you cannot re-register before May 1. If you have reserved your Chickadee Plate number or vanity plate, you will receive it in the mail the month before your registration is due to expire. You must bring your new reserved plates with you when you come to the Town Hall to re-register. It is not too late to reserve your plate. If you want to reserve your current Chickadee license plate number, you can! You just need to fill out some information and pay a one-time $25 fee. The BMV offers four easy ways to do this.

1. Go to the online portal for plate reservations at: maine.gov/online/reservemyplate
2. Reserve while using Rapid Renewal at: maine.gov/online/bmv/rapid-renewal/
3. Mail a paper form to 29 State House Station, Augusta, ME 04333-0029. To do this, go to maine.gov/sos/bmv/bmv-forms-and-applications and scroll down to “Registration Forms”
4. You can reserve your plate at a BMV branch office. To do this, go to maine.gov/sos/bmv/ and click on “Schedule an Appointment”. The BMV also accepts walk-ins however many people are visiting BMV branches for Real ID processing. Expect a long wait.

Rapid Renewal & Plate Number Reservations

If you have a Chickadee Plate, you can re-register early via Rapid Renewal after May 1. You can reserve your plates through Rapid Renewal as well. Plates reserved through the Rapid Renewal portal will ship after May 31st.
