Avoid Email Scams
The Town of Pownal is aware of a fraudulent email scam targeting individuals and businesses falsely claiming to be from the Town of Pownal. The email will use various language stating you have a “payment due on your assessment” or “to avoid late fees, please make a payment on your tax assessment.” A link or URL will be included in the email for either “more information” or “to make a payment.”
What to do:
- Do not respond to the email or provide payment
- Do not click on the URL
- Contact the Town Office with any questions 688-4461
- Contact the Cumberland County Sherriff’s office if you have sent money or feel you have been a victim of a scam
Any email correspondence from the town will end in .org. If the Town is in need of a payment, a formal signed letter will be sent instructing you to come to the town office for payment or we will call you instructing you to come to the town office. The Town of Pownal will never ask for payment over the phone or through an email link. We enjoy seeing you visit us at the counter!
