Road Commissioner and Public Works Director

Help keep Pownal moving year-round. The Town is seeking a full-time Road Commissioner/Director of Public Works to lead the Public Works Department. This department head plans and oversees all Public Works programs and operations and reports directly to the Select Board.

Town Overview
Pownal is a rural community in Cumberland County with a population of about 1,566 (2020 Census). Incorporated in 1808, the town is located between Freeport, Durham, North Yarmouth, and New Gloucester and is home to Bradbury Mountain State Park. Public Works maintains approximately 44 centerline miles of roadway, including about 14 miles of unpaved roads. Pownal operates under a Town Meeting/Select Board form of government.

Ideal candidates offer proven leadership and hands-on experience in winter road operations, road maintenance, and heavy equipment operations. This is a highly visible, multi-function role that combines planning and administration with field support and emergency response. Success requires strong organization, sound judgment, and the ability to set priorities, adapt to changing conditions, and keep crews and projects moving safely and efficiently.

 

Required skills

• Valid Class B Maine driver’s license
• Minimum 2-3 years of supervisory experience and winter road operations
• Minimum 2-3 years of experience in road maintenance (paved and unpaved)
• Experience with departmental budgeting and purchasing
• Experience operating and maintaining heavy equipment (e.g., excavators, graders, and front-end loaders

Optional skills

• Valid Class A Maine driver’s license

Compensation is competitive and based on experience. The Town of Pownal also offers a generous benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, a 457B plan, paid time off, and paid holidays. The base schedule is four 10-hour shifts (Monday–Thursday), with additional hours as needed during the winter months or emergency situations.
